How to Be the DJ of Your Own Wedding

In a world where portable music is king, why go to the trouble of hiring a DJ for your wedding when you can set up your own sound system? It’s surprisingly easy to do – all it takes is a little bit of planning beforehand.  Not only can you save money, but you’ll ensure that the soundtrack of your wedding is exactly what you want, with no surprises.

Here are some things to keep in mind if you want to be your own wedding DJ.

Tip #1: Test Your Venue’s Sound System Before the Wedding

Your wedding reception venue might have a speaker system set up, but don’t take their in-house AV for granted. Hook up your computer, smartphone, or iPod to their system first and test out a few songs to see how well the music carries.

You should get a good mix of bass, midtones, and treble. Plenty of receptions have been spoiled by inadequate speakers that were too quiet, sounded muffled, or didn’t have a good balance of sound. Which leads us to our next tip…

Tip #2: Get a Good Set of Speakers

If you want good sound quality, talk to an AV professional to see about renting out a sound system for the evening. They’ll be able to review the setup at your venue and recommend a set of speakers that will play loud and clear.

They’ll also help you find the right equipment to connect your laptop or iPod to the speakers – no more hunting around for the right cables with matching jacks. Even better, they’ll help you with your equipment setup at the beginning and the teardown at the end.

Tip #3: Don’t Forget the Mic

You’ll need your speaker system not only for blasting out your favourite music but also for giving announcements and speeches, so make sure to get a quality microphone for the latter.

We’ve all been to weddings that have been disrupted by bad feedback, so finding a sound system professional who can recommend a mic that won’t fall down on the job is important. Also, you’ll need to make sure that your microphone plays nice with all of your other sound equipment; this is another reason why finding an AV professional is a must.
